Regional Collaborations Programme

The Australian Academy of Science invites Australian research organisations and businesses to apply for funding under the Regional Collaborations Programme. This funding initiative is part of the Australian Government's Global Innovation Strategy under the National Innovation and Science Agenda. The programme will fund Australian participants from eligible organisations to collaborate with regional and international science, research and innovation partners on solutions to shared regional challenges within the Asia–Pacific regions.

The programme is designed to be flexible, with no set minimum or maximum funding requirements for project applications. This approach has been adopted to help foster innovative ideas and collaborations.

Although there is no set minimum or maximum total project cost requirement, projects much include matched funding of 1:1 (cash only). For example, if an applicant seeks $25,000 of programme funding, then the project proponents would need to contribute another $25,000 (cash), bringing the total value of the project to $50,000.

The $3.2 million four-year programme will support single-year or multi-year collaborative, multi-partner projects and non-project aligned collaborative workshops.

The programme aims to support the Australian Government’s commitment to:

assist in the removal of barriers for researchers and businesses seeking to collaborate on issues of regional and national significance
support technical and research mobility
build research capability, facilitating Australia’s access to global science and research networks and infrastructure.

Although there are no mandated priority areas from which to draw research topics, please consider the national Science and Research Priorities and associated practical research challenges, along with regional challenges identified through multilateral fora such as eAsia, Asia–Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the East Asia Summit.

Applicants must be either an Australian research organisation or Australian business willing to form collaborative multi-partner teams with participation from at least two other economies, with the intention of building strong international linkages within the Asia-Pacific region in science, research and innovation.

Pacific Fund 2017 call for projects

A call for projects for the French Pacific Fund has been launched for 2017. The allocated funds by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development is as in 2016, €1,500,000. The Pacific Fund could therefore co-fund approximately 40 projects, for an average of €30,000 per project. Any public or private body, institution, legal person can apply to this Fund).

Among many other projects, in 2016 this grant scheme supported the 2^nd PIURN Conference; the “Pacific business Forum”, a project of epidemiological surveillance of ciguatera, and more.

EU Delegation for the Pacific, located in Suva, is seeking a Project Officer. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation. Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as Project Officer – this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function the successful candidate will serve as support staff to the Infrastructure and Natural Resources Section with the following tasks under supervision and responsibility of the relevant Team Leader:

Effectively manage projects in the domain of infrastructure (notably energy) and natural resources included in the Delegation's portfolio.
Act as Operational Initiating Agent for transactions related to the implementation of the above projects. Review and approve reports, certify requests for payments. Update and maintain relevant data in our information system (CRIS).
Monitor the implementation of actions against set measurable objectives and targets. Review and assess Result Oriented Monitoring (ROM) reports and implement and follow up relevant recommendations. Update and maintain implementation reports in CRIS.
Develop and maintain a consistent view of bilateral relations with the countries and territories for which the Delegation is responsible.
Contribute to the policy dialogue at country level in the fields of infrastructure and natural resources. Provide relevant input and feedback to the Team Leader.
Assist the Head of Section in developing close contacts with local stakeholders, including in Governments and Administrations. Provide background and feedback for negotiations, including with local private sector representatives.
Contribute policy and implementation information to the communication material published by the Delegation (including on the Delegation Website and Facebook page).
Contribute to the achievements of the objectives of the Delegation's communication and visibility strategy.

International postgraduate course on Environmental Management for Developing and Emerging Countries

This 6-month course covers environmental management as an integrated interdisciplinary field. Therefore a broad range of topics is offered. The curriculum is organized in modules comprising issues of global sustainable development, environmental governance, environmental security, environmental economics and accounting, environmental awareness and public participation, applied ecology and ecosystem management, conservation of biodiversity, water management, recycling and waste management, energy for sustainable development, environmental assessment and environmental management systems, cleaner production and products and eco-efficiency, sustainable mobility, sustainable tourism as well as rural and urban land use planning. To provide survival knowledge of the German language a crash course is part of the programme. The lectures are held by professors of Technische Universität Dresden as well as experts from various national and international institutions.

A multitude of excursions to protected areas, industrial plants, public utilities for energy, water supply, waste water treatment, as well as waste recycling and disposal plants, environmental agencies and administrations etc. round off the course. They illustrate environmental problems and give ideas of successfully applied integrated environmental management practices. Participants are required to carry out a profound research on a specific environment related subject and present the results of this research in a symposium at the end of the course.

This course is particularly designed for decision-makers of public administration both at national and local level requiring an overall-competence in environmental matters. To gain the optimum from this training course, a first university degree (BA, BSc, e.g.) is absolutely indispensable. The nomination by the delegating institution is a mandatory prerequisite.

ARMS Chapter Travel Awards for Attendance to INORMS 2016

Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) Chapter Travel Awards aim to support the cost of attending and participating in the INORMS 2016 Conference. ARMS will be hosting the international INORMS conference in Melbourne from the 11^th-15^th of September. This conference replaces the annual ARMS conference for 2016 only.

Each Chapter Committee has been allocated a total of AUD 2,000 to be used to support Chapter Travel Awards. These awards contribute towards the cost of travel, accommodation or conference registration for eligible members attending the INORMS Conference. Chapter Committees may allocate a minimum of two awards at AUD 1,000 each or offer smaller awards (e.g. 4 awards at AUD 500 each).

International Climate Initiative call for 2017

The International Climate Initiative is open to a broad range of participants from Germany and abroad. It supports projects carried out in partner countries by German federal implementing agencies, NGOs, business enterprises, universities and research institutes based in Germany and abroad, and by international and multinational organizations and institutions, e.g. development banks and United Nations bodies and programmes.

The International Climate Initiative (IKI) supports projects in developing countries and emerging economies, and countries in transition. It consists of four areas of support:

Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions
Adapting to the impacts of climate change
Conserving natural carbon sinks with a focus on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+)
Conserving biological diversity

Solomon Islands Fisheries Programme – Offshore & Inshore Fisheries Advisors

The Mekem Strong Solomon Islands Fisheries (MSSIF) Programme has been developed under the Joint Commitment for Development between Solomon Islands and New Zealand. The goal of the Programme is the sustainable development and management of fisheries resources to ensure long-term benefits for the people of Solomon Islands. This continues New Zealand’s support to Solomon Islands fisheries sector, and the first phase of the MSSIF has been implemented. Phase Two will now build on the improvements the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) in Solomon Islands has made in the management and performance of the fisheries sector, focusing on further developing offshore fisheries, inshore fisheries and institutional capacity to sustainably develop and manage fisheries in Solomon Islands.

To assist with this programme, two roles have been identified that will contribute to the achievement of the goal and outcomes of MSSIF2. These are the Offshore Fisheries Advisor (OFA) and the Inshore Fisheries adviser (IFA).

Working closely as a team of four Advisors delivering services under the guidance of the MSSIF2 Team Leader and the Permanent Secretary for the MFMR, the successful candidates will require the ability to deliver the services of a senior technical advisor; work independently; liaise with other advisors, managers, stakeholders and community; plan and manage priorities; understand and respect the culture and diversity of the environment. These roles will appeal if you are interested in being part of the MSSIF Programme that directly contributes to the enhancement of local communities in Solomon Islands. Both these roles are two year part-time assignments (up to 100 days per annum) with a possible one year extension.

BNP Paribas climate initiative: call for projects 2016

Since 2010, the BNP Paribas Foundation has been developing its Climate Initiative, a corporate philanthropy programme to support scienti c research aimed at increasing our understanding about the climate and climate change, and to assess their impact on our environment.

The programme has a budget of €3 million over three years, and involves a call for projects followed by a rigorous selection process led by people who are well known within their area of research and representing a large scope of climate related research ends.

The aim of this call for projects is to select 4-7 research projects that will increase our understanding about issues related to climate change. The projects will receive nancial support from the BNP Paribas Foundation for a three-year period (2017-2019).

Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme

Applications are now open for the Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme, which funds exchanges for leading researchers in the early stages of their careers.

The scheme funds travel and living costs, enabling Australian researchers to spend time in Germany working alongside their German counterparts and bringing German researchers to Australia to work in local research institutions. Proposals must provide opportunities for exchanges between early career researchers.

The scheme is open to Australian researchers at participating Australian universities in all academic fields involved in a collaborative project with German research partners.

Applications for funding under the Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme are invited from 4 April to 17 June 2016.
